How to calculate content of ALCOHOL in drinks?
Conversion to gramme:
|
For each ml of ethanol, there are 0.79 grammes of pure
ethanol
Example:
§
1 can of beer (330ml) at 5 % (strength) X 0.79 =
13 g ethanol
§
1 glass of wine (140ml) at 12% X 0.79 = 13.3 g ethanol
§
1 shot of spirits (40ml) at 40% X 0.79 = 12.6 g
ethanol
Conversion to unit:
1 unit = 10 ml of pure ethanol = 7.9 grammes
|
Example:
§ 1
can of beer (330ml) at 5 % (strength) contains 1.65 units.
→ (330 X 5) ÷1000
= 1.65 units
NHS recommends:
Men – should not regularly drinking more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day.
Women - should not regularly drinking more than 2-3 units of alcohol a day.
NHS guidelines 2016 (UK) suggests a new limit of 14 units per week this applies to both men and women.
